| Isle of Man - 1988 Manx Cat Coin | |
|
The Manx Cat.
This tailless cat has become a national symbol for its homeland, the Isle of Man,
and made a natural choice for the first coin in this extremely popular series. The
origins of this native Manx are steeped in mystery - biblical references abound, as do
tales of shipwrecked felines swimming ashore from Spanish galleons. Shy but
friendly, clever and endearing, the Manx has a personality all of its own, as does the
coin. The 1988 coin is the first of the Isle of Man Cat series, and it has a beautiful Manx Cat on the back and a picture of Queen Elizabeth II on the front. This coin is CuNi (Cupro Nickel) in a Brilliant Uncirculated minting. The contrast in the photo at left was enhanced to show the striking coin detail. |
